Vulcans advance to NCAA Round of 16, 5-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. (May 8) – The No. 12 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team captured its third-straight regional title on Friday with a 5-0 win against No. 39 University of Charleston (W.Va.) in the third round of the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship Tournament at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

The Vulcans improve to 22-2 overall this season and now advance to the Round of 16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. Cal U will face Stonehill College (Mass.) (21-3), the Northeast-10 Conference champions, on Wednesday, May 13.

Cal U jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play for the 11th-consecutive match. The Vulcans lost only a combined five games in the three doubles matches against the Golden Eagles.

Graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) earned their 20th doubles victory of the season after posting an 8-3 victory over Bre Moyle and Neha Rana at the first position. In second doubles, freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) and sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) claimed an 8-1 win against Katie Kim and Alyssa Hackworth. Freshman Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and sophomore Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) remain unbeaten as a doubles team after dealing Alexa Kay and Sarah Monsheimer an 8-1 defeat.

In singles play, Stanila registered her team-leading 28th win in singles play after earning a 6-1, 6-0 win against Rana at the second position. Sophomore Laurie Navarro (Eysus, France/Jules Supervielle) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Kay at sixth singles.
