No. 12 Tennis blanks West Virginia State, 5-0

GREENSBURG, Pa. (May 7) – The No. 12 Vulcans extended their win streak to 12-consecutive matches on Thursday following an impressive 5-0 victory over West Virginia State in the second round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship Tournament at the Greensburg Racquet Club.

The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team improves to 21-2 overall and will now face the University of Charleston (W.Va.) tomorrow, Friday, May 8, for the Atlantic Regional Championship. The winner of the match will represent the region at the NCAA Championships from May 13-16 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Against West Virginia State, the Vulcans lost only a combined four games in five complete matches.

Cal U jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles play. At the first position, the nationally-ranked tandem of Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) earned an 8-2 win against Teddi Russell and Erika Acosta. Freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France /Institut Familial) and Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) dealt Eben Russell and Brittany Craig an 8-1 defeat at second singles. Freshman Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and sophomore Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) completed the sweep of doubles after claiming an 8-1 win against Emily Bowlin and Meghan Stewart.

Fernandez and Zherdeva also registered 6-0, 6-0 victories at third and fifth singles, respectively, to clinch the victory.

Earlier this season, the Vulcans posted a 9-0 victory over the Golden Eagles, who won the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC).
