No. 12 Tennis powers past Shippensburg, 9-0

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (April 8) – The No. 12 Vulcans clinched at least a share of an unprecedented fifth-straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West title on Wednesday with a dominating 9-0 victory against Shippensburg University.

The nationally-ranked California University of Pennsylvania tennis team has earned the PSAC West title in each of the last five seasons dating back to the 2005 campaign. Before this recent run, the Vulcans only claimed the divisional crown twice in program history (1991 and 1993).

With the win, Cal U improves to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Shippensburg drops to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

The Vulcans improved to 12-0 in doubles play in PSAC action this year with three 8-0 victories at Shippensburg. Graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International) and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) teamed up for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles over the Raiders' Jackie Kramer and Jess Lodek. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) tallied an 8-0 win over Ali Horvath and Calli Weidler. Freshman Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) and sophomore Galina Vishnikina (Almaty, Kazakhstan/Sport Military) completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory at the third slot over Hannah Lolley and Monica Berardi.

In singles action, Stanila – the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week – earned her team-best No. 25 win, while freshman Anastassiya Zherdeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) claimed her seventh-consecutive victory. VanEysendeyk topped Kramer at the No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), while Fernandez swept Light in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Kowalski and sophomore Laurie Navarro completed the singles sweep with 6-0, 6-0 victories at Nos. 4 and 6, respectively.

The Vulcans didn't lose a game or set in any of the nine matches against the Raiders.

Cal U returns to action with a non-conference match against the University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Friday, April 10. The match-up between two of the three teams in the Atlantic Region (Vulcans – No. 1; Golden Eagles – No. 3) is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park, Pa.
