Cal U advances to PSAC Finals, 67-57

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (March 6) – Following a 67-57 victory over Millersville University on Thursday, the No. 3 Vulcans are advancing to the finals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament for a school and league record ninth-straight season.

Already having won the PSAC West title, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team moves to 26-3 overall this season and will face Indiana University of Pennsylvania tomorrow, Saturday, March, 7, in the PSAC Finals in West Chester, Pa. IUP claimed a 79-63 victory over the host Golden Rams in the other PSAC Semifinal match-up.

The Vulcans and Crimson Hawks will be facing for the PSAC Championship for the third-straight year with IUP winning the previous two meetings. Cal U swept the regular-season series with IUP, winning the two games by a combined 24 points.

The PSAC Championship featuring Cal U and IUP will be available on B2 Networks.

Junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) collected her 21st double-double of the season with game-high totals of 21 points and 11 rebounds (three offensive). The All-America candidate shot 8-of-15 from the floor and five-of-eight from the free-throw line. She also collected four steals, while playing nearly all 40 minutes.

Sophomore Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) extended her double-double streak to four games, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds (five offensive). The 5-11 forward also posted four assists and two steals while playing all 40 minutes.

Sophomore guard Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) scored 13 points, one shy of her season high. She made six-of-nine attempts from the floor and added six rebounds and four steals. Senior point guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown) finished with eight points, four steals and two rebounds.

The Vulcans trailed by as many as 10 points, 32-22, with 3:05 left in the first half. However, Cal U scored the next eight points to close the deficit to 32-30 at the break.

With the score tied at 38-38 in the early minutes of the second half, the Vulcans mounted a 19-5 run to take a 55-43 lead with back-to-back traditional three-point play by Williams. The Marauders cut the deficit to single digits, 59-50, with 5:19 remaining before working the lead down to six points, 63-57, with 55 seconds left in the game. However, Cal U converted all four free-throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.

For the game, Cal U shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the floor and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Millersville made 42.4 percent (25-of-59) of its shot attempts and just 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from the charity stripe.

The Vulcans out-rebounded the Marauders by a 43-32 advantage and scored 32 points in the paint. Cal U also collected 14 steals on 20 turnovers, which it converted into 22 points.

Junior guard Aiesha Bellamy scored a team-high 16 points for Millersville, while senior forward Gladine St. Julien scored 11 points and scored her 1,000 career point in the game.

The Vulcans conclude play in the PSAC Tournament with a final game against IUP – the third seed in the Western Division – tomorrow, Saturday, March 7.
