No. 9 Vulcans top No. 25 Augusta State, 5-3

TAMPA (Feb. 27) – The No. 9 California University of Pennsylvania tennis team earned two doubles victories and took three of the five completed singles matches in a 5-3 victory over No. 25 Augusta State University (Ga.) on Friday.

With the win, the Vulcans move to 7-1 in dual matches with a 3-1 mark during the spring season.

The match featured a battle between two of the top 50 singles players in the country at No. 1 position with graduate student Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France/Zurich International), the third-rated singles player in Division II, facing No. 34 Natalia Rodrigues, a senior from Brazil. VanEysendeyk outlasted Rodrigues to post a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win.

In doubles action, VanEysendeyk and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) collected an 8-1 win over Rodrigues and senior Fernanda Chiaparini at the first slot. Sophomore Nina Kowalski (Hofheim, Germany/Man Taunus) and freshman Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) secured the second win in doubles play for Cal U with an 8-3 victory over sophomores Camila Correa and Giovanna Fensterseifer at the No. 3 position.

Stanila picked up her team-leading 18th win of the season in singles play after dropping Chiaparini at the second slot, 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory to clinch the match for the Vulcans.

Cal U continues its Spring Break play tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 28, when it travels to Saint Leo University in a home match for the Lions.
