MANSFIELD, Pa. (Nov. 7) – The Vulcans finished 13th overall in the team standings at the 2009 NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships on Saturday behind a 17th-place individual finish by freshman Erin Kling (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown).

The 13th-place team showing by the California University of Pennsylvania women's cross country team ranks as one of the best in the last two decades. Last year, the Vulcans finished 20th overall which was at the time their best showing since 2004.

Kling posted the time of any freshmen at the 152-runner event, finishing the 6K race in 22 minutes, 16 seconds. She was the Vulcans' top finisher in six of seven races this year to register one of the best freshman campaigns in program history.

Redshirt sophomore Brittney Kanach (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) placed second for Cal U and 70th overall with a time of 23:56, while senior Clare McSweeney (Cork, Ireland/St. Aloysius) finished close behind in 24:11. Juniors Laurie Hall (Jackson, Pa./Blue Ridge) and Bethany Stone (Susquehanna, Pa./Blue Ridge) rounded out the Vulcan scorers by finishing 24:36 and 24:40, respectively.

Freshman Carly Youngeberg (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) posted a time of 24:41, while senior Tricia Learn (Troy, Pa./Homeschooled) finished the NCAA regional race in 25:35.

Shippensburg earned the NCAA regional title with 86 points after having two runners finish in the top five. Kutztown finished second at the 24-team event with 100 points, while Bloomsburg (120), Slippery Rock (135) and Millersville (136) rounded out top-five team finishes. Red Raiders' sophomore Neely Spence won the individual title by 26 seconds after crossing the finish line in 20:15.
