Cal U downs Ashland in tournament, 83-74

ASHLAND, Ohio (Nov. 29) – Senior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) posted game-high totals of 26 points and 13 rebounds (six offensive) on Sunday to lead the No. 3 Vulcans to an 83-74 win over Ashland in the second day of the Holiday Inn Express Classic.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 4-1 this season under first-year head coach Mark Swasey. Through five games, the Vulcans are averaging an impressive 82.4 points after shooting 47.2 percent (149-of-316) from the floor. Meanwhile, the host Eagles drop to 2-1 this year.

Williams finished with 26 points after making 10-of-19 attempts from the field and six-of-nine from the free-throw line. She added 13 points and four steals at Ashland. The All-American guard has posted 20.4 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in the early portion of the 2009-10 campaign.

Junior forward Kayla Smith (Elkins, W.Va./Elkins) added 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting with seven rebounds and three assists, while redshirt freshman guard Kiara Brown (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) finished with 15 points and five steals against the Eagles.

Senior point guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown) totaled eight points and three assists, while freshman guard Stephanie Michael (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) scored a season-high eight points off the bench.

Ashland led 38-34 at halftime and expanded its lead to as many as six points, 45-39, in the early minutes of the second half. Cal U then mounted a 17-3 run over a 4:01 stretch to claim a 45-39 lead after a lay-up by Williams with 12:46 left in the game. Later in the half, the Vulcans scored six-straight points to stretch their lead to 69-58 after a lay-up by Smith with 7:16 remaining. After trailing by as many as 14 points, 81-67, the Eagles cut the deficit to single-digits, 81-72, with 1:00 minute left before Andrews sealed the victory with a pair of free-throws in the final minute.

After shooting over 60 percent in the second half, the Vulcans finished the game shooting 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field. Cal U also made 75.9 percent (22-of-29) from the free-throw line. In comparison, Ashland made 46.7 percent (28-of-60) of its shots from the floor and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. The Eagles also made 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from three-point territory.

Cal U out-rebounded Ashland by a 41-32 margin with 15 second-chance points on 16 offensive rebounds. The Vulcans also scored 25 points off turnovers and collected 13 steals.

The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2, when they travel to face Kutztown at 6 p.m. Two years ago, Cal U posted a 72-61 win over Kutztown at Hamer Hall.
