Vulcans top Dominican, 65-47

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Nov. 20) – Junior forward Andrew Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Cheltenham) led all players with 18 points and eight rebounds and the Vulcans committed only 10 turnovers in a 65-47 victory over Dominican (N.Y.) in the second day of the Alaska Invitational presented by Fairbanks Youth Sports.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team evens its record to 1-1 while Dominican drops to 1-1 this year. A member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC), the Chargers finished with 10-17 overall record last year.

Young scored a game-high 18 points after shooting six-of-nine from the floor and making six-of-seven from the free-throw line. Senior guard Jerial Nixon (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Admiral King) added 12 points and three rebounds, while sophomore forward Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio / Sandusky) finished with 10 points. In his first start, true freshman Ryne Niemiec (Brownsville, Pa./Beth-Center) tallied seven points, three rebounds and two steals in 27 minutes.

Trailing by five points midway through the first half, Cal U scored seven-straight points to take a 13-11 lead with 11:26 after Niemiec converted a traditional three-point play. With four minutes left in the opening half, the Vulcans scored nine-unanswered points to seize a 31-20 lead before the Chargers cut the deficit to 31-27 at halftime.

Cal U opened the second half with three-straight baskets to increase its lead to 37-24 lead on a dunk by Kelsey Williams. After Dominican cut the lead to 11 points, the Vulcans sealed the victory with a 20-7 run over a 12-minute span to take a 59-35 lead with 5:10 left in the game.

For the game, Cal U shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor despite making only one-of-nine from beyond the arc. However, the Vulcans shot 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) from the charity stripe. In the loss, Dominican made 51.3 percent (20-of-39) of its shots and only attempted eight free-throws.

The Vulcans out-rebounded the Chargers by a 29-21 margin and scored 17 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds. Cal U also forced Dominican into 21 turnovers and converted the turnovers into 20 points.

Cal U concludes play at the Alaska Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 21, when it faces hosts Alaska Fairbanks. Tip-off is set for 11:30 p.m. Eastern time.
