Cal U tops rival No. 10 Slippery Rock, 3-1

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 7) – In a match-up of two of the top six teams in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic Region rankings, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team scored two first-half goals en route to a 3-1 upset over No. 10 Slippery Rock on Wednesday at Roadman Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With their sixth-straight victory, the Vulcans improve to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in divisional play. Meanwhile, The Rock falls to 10-2 this year with a 5-1 mark in league action. Slippery Rock, who entered the week as the second-ranked team in the regional NSCAA poll, had previously won nine-consecutive games. Cal U opened the week as sixth-ranked team in the regional poll.

Senior forward Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) scored a pair of goals in the win to move into third place in school history with 48 career goals, tying and surpassing the 47 goals tallied by Roger Gordan (1993-96). In 66 career games, Luke has now recorded 117 points on 48 goals and 21 assists.

Luecke gave the Vulcans a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute off an assist by freshman Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More). Junior forward Felipe Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Coleaio Objetivo) expanded the lead to 2-0 with his sixth goal of the year at the 27:09-mark off a feed from Visekruna. Slippery Rock answered with a goal by senior Jeremy Deighton in the 32nd minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the second half, Luecke added an insurance goal for the Vulcans at the 65:22-mark after dribbling around The Rock goalkeeper for the goal.

Junior goalie Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned his sixth win of the season in net after making three saves. In comparison, Slippery Rock's Greg Blum finished with four saves.

The Vulcans out-shot The Rock by a 14-10 margin while each teams took four corner kicks.

The game featured two of the premier offensive players in the PSAC with Deighton and Luecke. Deighton, the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year, now leads the PSAC with 10 goals this year. Luecke leads the league with 24 points on nine goals and six assists in 2009 after finishing last year with a PSAC-best 48 points.

Cal U continues its homestand on Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hosts Shippensburg at Roadman Park for Alumni and Dunlevy Day. The game against the Red Raiders is set for a 1 p.m. start after an alumni scrimmage at 10 a.m. in Adamson Stadium.
