Vulcans post sweep at Clarion, 3-0

CLARION, Pa. (Oct. 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team claimed sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division standings on Friday after posting a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-17, 25-18) over Clarion.

Both the Vulcans and Golden Eagles hold 16-4 overall records with Cal U moving to 7-0 in league action and Clarion dropping to 6-1 in divisional play.

Junior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) collected a team-high 19 digs in the win – her highest three-set total of the year. Senior Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) finished 14 digs, while classmates Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) and Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) each collected nine digs.

Offensively, senior middle hitter Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) posted a team-high 11 kills while Nist and sophomore Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added nine and eight kills, respectively.

Amaral also recorded four blocks (one solo), while freshman Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) set a season-high with six blocks (one solo). As a team, the Vulcans tied their season high of 11 total blocks (three solo).

Cal U continues its weekend road trip tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 3, when it faces Slippery Rock for a 4 p.m. match.
