CALIFORNIA (Oct. 16) – After dropping the first set, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team rallied to a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-23, 25-16, 25-10) over Mercyhurst on Friday night at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 22-4 overall and 13-0 in conference play. Cal U also extended its current win streak to 15 matches. Meanwhile, the Lakers drop to 17-7 this season with an 8-4 mark in league action.
Junior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) led the team with 17 kills and 17 digs for her 14th kill/dig double-double of the season. Sophomore middle hitter
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added 14 kills on .458 hitting, while senior middle hitter
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) finished with nine kills and five blocks (two solo).
Senior All-American setter
Renata da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) directed the offense with 57 assists and also collected a double-double as she added 15 digs. Classmate
Ashley Moore (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) added 13 digs and seven kills in the win.
Cal U returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20, when it travels to face Juniata in Huntingdon, Pa., at 7 p.m. The Eagles are a perennial NCAA Division III national contender and are currently ranked second in the country.
