Williams, Johnson post double-doubles in win

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. (Jan. 4) – Senior guard Lindsay Johnson (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) and junior guard Brooque Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./Perry) combined to score 50 points on Sunday to lead the No. 5 Vulcans to a 76-60 road victory over Millersville University at the Pucillo Gymnasium in a meeting of two of the top programs in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and NCAA East Region.

The California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team has won six of their last seven games to improve to 8-2 overall. Millersville, who topped No. 8 Indiana University of Pennsylvania yesterday, drops to 9-2.

Williams scored a game-high 27 points after making a season-best 11-of-12 attempts from the free-throw line. The 5-8 guard made 8-of-15 shots from the floor and posted 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and No. 16 of her career. Williams leads the Vulcans with a career-high 20.3 points per game this season and ranks No. 21 in school history with 985 career points.

Johnson tied a career high with 23 points against the Marauders after shooting 9-of-14 from the field with three three-pointers. The third-year starter also set a career mark with a game-high 14 rebounds and collected three steals. Johnson is also within reach of surpassing the 1,000-career point plateau, as she has amassed 951 career points.

Sophomore guard Amber Dubyak (Hastings, Pa./Cambria Heights) also scored a season-high 14 points after making 5-of-8 shot attempts, including four treys.

Cal U took a 35-30 lead into halftime before Millersville cut the deficit to three points, 35-32, on a jumper early in the second half. The Vulcans countered with a 9-2 rally to take a 44-34 lead behind a three-pointer from Johnson with 17:15 remaining.

The Marauders challenged again, cutting the Vulcans' lead to seven points, 44-37, on a three-point play by senior Gadine St. Julien. Cal U responded with a game-clinching 18-5 rally over a six-plus minute stretch to expand its lead to 62-42 with 10:44 remaining. Behind three-pointers from Dubyak and senior guard Crystal Andrews (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown/Pitt-Johnstown), the Vulcans made six-of-nine shots during the run. In comparison, the Cal U defense limited Millersville to only 2-of-10 shooting.

Over the final 10 minutes of the game, the Marauders were only able to cut the deficit to 11 points, 65-45, before the Vulcans made three-straight shots to increase their lead to 71-54 with 5:35 remaining.

For the game, Cal U shot 52.0 percent (26-of-50) behind a 63.6 shooting percentage in the second half when the Vulcans went 14-of-22 from the field. In contrast, Millersville was limited to 40.4 percent shooting, making 23-of-57 shot attempts.

For the eighth time this year, the Vulcans out-rebounded their opponents. Cal U held a distinct 43-25 edge on the boards against Millersville with 15 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second-chance points. Behind seven steals from Andrews, the Vulcans collected 16 steals on 22 Marauder turnovers.

Millersville was led by junior Emily Balogh with 14 points off the bench, while senior guard Jenna Philo finished with 12 points. St. Julien, a 6-0 forward, was held to only five points after entering the game as the Marauders' top scorer at 13.6 points per game.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, against Lake Erie College for the first of a season-long four-game homestand at Hamer Hall. Tip-off against The Storm is set for 6 p.m.
