Vulcans win fifth-straight game, 61-54

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Jan. 17) – Behind the momentum of a 9-0 run midway through the second half, the Vulcans remain unbeaten in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division play after claiming a 61-54 over Lock Haven University at Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday.

The California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five games and improves to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Lock Haven drops to 2-13 overall and 0-2 in divisional action.

Freshman forward Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) led three Cal U players in double figures with 14 points on 7-of-16 shooting and added seven rebounds. Junior forward Chris Moore (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) registered a double-double off the bench with 13 points and 11 rebounds (four offensive). Senior guard Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) also finished with 13 points and added five rebounds and five assists in the win.

With the score tied at 34-34 and 13:14 remaining in the game, Cal U mounted a 9-0 rally to take a 43-34 lead with 8:22 left. The Vulcans expanded the lead to 10 points, 49-39, with 5:18 remaining on an emphatic dunk by Moore. Lock Haven responded with five-straight point to cut the lead to 52-47 before eventually cutting the deficit to four points, 58-54, after Billy Arre converted three-straight free-throws with 16 seconds remaining. The Vulcans sealed the win when Moore collected the rebound on an errant Bald Eagle three-pointer. He made the first of two free-throws before collecting his own miss and adding a lay-up with four second left, 61-54.

Cal U finished the game shooting 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor after making 57.1 percent (16-of-28) of its shots during the second half. In comparison, Lock Haven shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field, but committed 14 turnovers.

Led by 13 points from Moore, the Vulcan bench finished the game with 22 points.

Cal U continues PSAC West play on Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it travels to face Clarion University for an 8 p.m. start.
