Cal U upsets No. 6 Gannon in PSAC West play

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 14) – Senior forward Julian Logan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix/Owens C.C. (Ohio)) led three players in double-figure scoring on Wednesday, as the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team posted a 62-55 upset win over No. 6 Gannon University in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener at Hamer Hall.

After a tough 4-5 start to the season, the Vulcans have won four-straight games to improve to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in divisional play. The nationally-ranked Golden Knights fall to 11-2 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Logan scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting with five rebounds and two assists. The Michigan native helped give Cal U a four-point halftime lead after scoring 14 points in the first half. Logan leads the team in both scoring (11.9 per game) and rebounding (5.1 per game) this season.

Senior guard Jesse Brooks (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding/Maryland Eastern Shore) and freshman forward Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) each added 10 points. Senior guard Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls/Ferrum (Va.)/CCBC) finished with nine points and a team-high six rebounds and five assists.

Cal U, who entered the game last in the PSAC in free-throw shooting, made 15-of-18 attempts (83.3 percent) from the charity stripe against Gannon. In the final minute of the game, the Vulcans made five-of-six free-throw attempts.

Leading 30-26 at halftime, the two teams remained close throughout the second half with Cal U holding a double-digit lead for less than three combined minutes. The Vulcans led by as many as 12 points, 50-38, with 9:06 remaining following a jumper by Brooks.

Gannon cut the deficit to four points, 53-49, on a three-pointer by senior guard Joe Lindsey. After the two teams exchanged a pair of free-throws, Brooks expanded the lead back to six points, 57-51, with a jumper and three minutes remaining. Lindsey countered with a three-pointer at the 1:53-mark to cut the lead to 57-54. However, the Vulcans sealed the victory down the stretch by making five-of-six free-throws in the final minute.

Cal U shot 46.0 percent (23-of-50) from the floor against the Golden Knights and limited Gannon to 37.5 percent (18-of-48) shooting for the game.

Despite being out-rebounded by a 34-27 margin, the Vulcans held a 36-20 edge in points in the paints and scored 12 second-chance points on nine offensive rebounds. Junior forward Chris Moore (Ellicott City, Md./Howard/Morgan State (Md.)) continued his strong play in the post, collecting five blocks, three rebounds and four points.

Gannon had two players in double-figures as senior Pierre Howard finished with 20 points and Lindsey had 10 points.

Cal U continues divisional play on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it travels to face Lock Haven University (2-12, 0-1 PSAC West) for a 3 p.m. contest.
