CALIFORNIA (Jan. 10) – Junior forward
Chris Moore (Ellicott City, Md./Howard/Morgan State (Md.)) blocked the potential game-winning shot with three-tenths of a second remaining on Saturday to lift the California University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team to 55-53 victory over Cheyney University at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.
With the victory, the Vulcans move to 6-5 overall, while the Wolves fall to 7-3 this season. Despite the game featuring only four lead changes, the game between two of the perennial conference contenders was close throughout.
Senior guard
Kenny Johnson (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls/Ferrum (Va.)/CCBC) led Cal U with 11 points, including a free-throw with one-tenth of a second remaining in the game after Cheyney was whistled for an intentional foul following the Moore block.
Freshman forward
Kelsey Williams (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds (three offensive). Sophomore guard
Joe Berenato (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and senior forward
Julian Logan (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix/Owens C.C. (Ohio)) each added seven points.
Moore, a 6-8 forward, finished the game with six points, five rebounds and two blocks.
The Vulcans held a 48-47 lead with 3:22 left in the game before the Wolves claimed a 49-48 lead on a jumper. After the two teams exchanged free-throws, senior guard
Jesse Brooks made a jumper in the paint with 1:30 remaining to give Cal U a 51-50 lead. The Vulcans increased their lead to 54-51 with 18 seconds left after a pair of free throws by Berenato. Cheyney cut the deficit to 54-53 with a pair of free-throws and after a Vulcan turnover had the ball for the game's final possession. Smith attempted the potential game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds before Moore denied the attempt and the ball was passed to Johnson to seal the win.
In the first half, Cal U held an 11-6 lead before Cheyney mounted an 18-2 rally to claim a 24-13 lead over a six-minute span. The Vulcans answered with an 11-6 run to close the half trailing 30-24.
For the game, Cal U shot 42.9 percent (18-of-42) from the floor. The Vulcan defense limited the Wolves to a 35.2 shooting performance (19-of-54), including just 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) during the second half.
The Vulcans return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 11, when they host Shippensburg University for a 3 p.m. contest at Hamer Hall.
