CALIFORNIA (Aug. 28) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team opened the 2008 campaign in impressive fashion on Thursday afternoon at Roadman Park, posting a 4-1 victory against Alderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.). The win also featured a milestone for head coach Dennis Laskey, as he earned his 200th career win against the Battlers.

Laskey, who has served as head coach of the Vulcans for 23 of the program's 25-year history, is just one of only 21 active head men's soccer coaches in NCAA Division II to reach the 200-win plateau.

With less than six minutes before halftime, the Vulcans grabbed a 1-0 lead as sophomore Spencer Crider (Orrstown, Pa./Chambersburg) scored off a rebound by junior forward Mike Luecke (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton).

After holding a 1-0 lead at halftime, Cal U opened up the contest with two goals in a 10-minute stretch in the second half to seal the season-opening victory. Senior Shakir McCoy (Huber Heights, Ohio/Tecumseh/Wayne) added to the Vulcans' lead in the 62nd minute off an assist from junior forward Felipe Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Coleaio Objectivo). Luecke, the team's top scorer last season with 16 goals, tallied his first goal of the new season off an assist from Souza at the 73:13-mark.

The Battlers avoided the shutout when Jared Patrick scored in the 80th minute, however, the Vulcans answered back with a goal from senior Jeremy Blymiller with an assist to Luecke.

Pacing the Cal U offense on the evening was Luecke, who recorded four points on a goal and two assists, and Souza, who collected two assists. The Vulcans out-shot the Battlers by a 21-8 margin during the game after attempting 13 shots in the first half.

Sophomore Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned the victory in net for California after posting three saves in 79-plus minutes of action. Battlers' goalkeeper Neil Wright-Elliot suffered the loss after posting nine saves on 21 shot attempts.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Aug. 30, with a 6 p.m. contest against Shippensburg University in the Raiders' season-opening contest.
