No. 16 Cal U advances to PSAC Semifinals

CALIFORNIA (Nov. 11) – Behind a combined 35 kills from juniors Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood), the No. 16 California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team posted a 3-1 win (25-12, 25-16, 17-25, 25-18) over Slippery Rock University in the quarterfinal round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament at Hamer Hall on Tuesday evening.

The Vulcans are advancing to the PSAC Semifinals for the fourth-straight year and as the top remaining seed will serve as the host for both semifinal matches and championship match.

With the win, Cal U improves to 35-1 overall and is only one victory shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. Meanwhile, Slippery Rock finishes the year with a 25-11 overall mark.

Nist registered a match-high 18 kills and moved into fourth place in school history with 1,278 career kills, passing the mark of 1,262 set by Jessica Brown (2002-05). The junior outside hitter also added nine digs and two assists in the victory.

Amaral added 17 kills and three service aces, while junior setter Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) collected seven kills with a .636 hitting percentage. The All-American setter also finished with 45 assists and eight digs.

Junior libero Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) led all players with 27 digs, while senior defensive specialist Mallory DeMarco (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) collected 14 digs.

Cal U will host Shippensburg University in one of two PSAC Semifinal matches scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14. The Vulcans and Raiders will play at 7:30 p.m. in Hamer Hall.
