Mallory DeMarco (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) reached a personal milestone on Senior Night at Hamer Hall, as the No. 19 California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team earned a 3-0 win (25-19, 25-14, 25-20) over Gannon University on Friday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
With the win, the Vulcans clinch the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Tournament and improve to 33-1 overall and 11-0 in divisional play. Cal U currently holds a 1.5-game lead entering its final match of the season, which is scheduled for next Saturday, Nov. 8, against Edinboro University. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 11-14 overall and 2-9 in league action.
DeMarco registered eight digs against Gannon to become just the fifth player in school history to collect 1,000 digs in a career. Classmate
Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) led all players with 18 digs on Friday to increase her career total to 1,743, just 78 digs shy of tying the all-time school record.
Junior outside hitter
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) paced the offense with 12 kills on a .429 hitting percentage and added nine digs, three blocks and three service aces against the Golden Knights. Middle hitters
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added nine and five kills, respectively.
Junior setter
Renata Silva engineered the Vulcans with 28 assists, while also recording four kills and four blocks.
Cal U is idle for over a week before concluding its regular season next Saturday, Nov. 8, with a road match against the Fighting Scots of Edinboro.
