CALIFORNIA (Oct. 21) – The No. 19 Vulcans earned their 30th overall victory of the season on Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) against Mercyhurst College in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play at Hamer Hall.
The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team moves to 30-1 overall and 9-0 in divisional play, while Mercyhurst falls to 18-10 and 5-3 in PSAC West action. The Vulcans have now won 30 or more matches in each of the last four seasons and five times in school history.
Juniors
Ludmila Amaral (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Afonso Schimidt) and
Joanna Nist (Rockwood, Pa./Rockwood) each collected a team-high 11 kills against the Lakers. Nist, who was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, registered her 13th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs.
Junior libero
Marta Hodge (Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg) led Cal U with 19 digs, while senior
Mallory DeMarco (Cranberry, Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Nist each added 10 digs. All-American setter
Renata Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) finished the match with 30 assists, four digs and four blocks.
The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, Oct. 23, when they face two-time NCAA Division III National Champion (2004, 2006) Juniata College, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the Division III Coaches Poll. The match will be played at North Star High School in Boswell, Pa., with a start time of 7 p.m.
