Cal U wins titles at PSAC Indiv. Championships

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 12) – Junior Helena VanEysendeyk (Meythet, France / Zurich International) and freshman Axelle Fernandez (Nice, France/Institut Familial) captured the doubles title for the Vulcans and freshman Alina Stanila (Alexandria, Romania/Technical) won the singles crown at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Individual Championships on Sunday.

The California University of Pennsylvania tennis team has now won each of the last three singles and doubles titles at the annual PSAC Individual Championships.

VanEysendeyk and Fernandez entered the championship tournament as the No. 1 seed in the doubles bracket and posted a 3-0 record en route to the doubles championship. The Vulcan duo recorded an 8-1 victory over senior Jaclyn McLean and junior Meghan Raynor of Mercyhurst College on Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.

VanEysendeyk and Fernandez, both natives of France, claimed another 8-1 victory on Sunday morning against juniors Rohini Das and Barbara Joerns of Kutztown University. In the championship match, the Cal U doubles team claimed an 8-3 victory against the Slippery Rock University pairing of sophomore Samantha Blackburn and senior Kayla Blackburn.

In singles action, Stanila won the championship after posting a 4-0 record as the No. 1 seed in the bracket. After an opening-round bye, the freshman claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alison Carney of host Bloomsburg University. In the quarterfinals, Stanila registered a 6-2, 6-3 victory against teammate Fernandez.

Stanila then opened Sunday morning with a victory against Samantha Blackburn of Slippery Rock. In the championship match, she earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against Das of Kutztown.

Fernandez posted an opening-round victory over junior Andrea Konas of Millersville University before earning a 6-2, 6-3 win against Joerns of Kutztown.

Freshman Mariana Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Martha Falcao) also competed in the singles bracket for the Vulcans.
