CALIFORNIA (Oct. 10) – As part of its annual Homecoming festivities, California University of Pennsylvania inducted eight members into the Athletic Hall of Fame Class at a banquet in the Performance Center of the Elmo Natali Student Center.
The 14th-annual Cal U Hall of Fame Class alphabetically includes Nicholas Addlery '03 (men's soccer), Melissa Brooks '02 (softball), Dr. Paul Burd (administrator), Richard "Dick" Caputo '64 (football), Audrey Dawson-Anderson (women's soccer), Fran Herron '53 (coach and player), Sebastian "Sibby" Lonigro '57 (men's basketball) and Scott "Scooter" Roebuck '88 (baseball).
Also recognized at this year's banquet in honor of their 50th anniversary was the Cal U PSAC champion 1958 Vulcan football team that compiled a perfect 8-0 overall record.
Addlery is the third men's soccer player in school history to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and played from 1999 through 2002. The 1999 PSAC Rookie of the Year, Addlery helped the Vulcans win PSAC regular season titles in 2000 and 2002. He is still second to teammate and 2007 Cal U Hall of Fame inductee Tomas Boltnar in career goals (52) and points (124). A two-time All-Region l pick and one-time national All-American, Addlery has gone on to an exceptional professional career and is currently one of the top players for the Vancouver Whitecaps of the United Soccer League's First Division.
Brooks was a four-year starter from 1999-2002 and helped the Vulcans compile a 149-49 cumulative record win four consecutive PSAC-West titles, two PSAC crowns and one NCAA II Regional championships. She was the 1999 PSAC-West Rookie of the Year and 2000 PSAC-West Player of the Year before moving to the outfield her last two years. An NFCA All-American and two-time all-region selection, she holds the school record for single-game strikeouts (2000) with 14 and fewest walks in a season with 17 (2000). She ranks second in school history in career strikeouts (497) and career ERA (0.74). Brooks, who finished with 53 career victories, tossed four career no-hitters with three perfect games.
Burd served Cal U for 35 years. He was Interim Vice President for Student Development from January 1992 through December 1992 and was appointed Vice President for Student Development and Services on August 21, 1993. He served in that capacity until retiring in January 2004. Burd began his tenure at California in May 1969 as fulltime faculty member. Throughout the years, he served as Assistant Director for Financial Aid, Assistant Dean of Men, and Dean of Students. Preferring to be behind-the-scenes, Burd played an invaluable role with Cal's aggressive fund-raising efforts and overall support that enabled the Cal athletics to become one of the premiere programs in NCAA Division II.
Caputo was a standout lineman for the Vulcan football team from 1961 through 1963 and then served as an assistant football coach at Cal U under Hal Hunter and 1995 Cal U Hall of Fame inductee
Jeff Petrucci from 1977 through 1988. He was the defensive line coach on Cal's 1984 PSAC championship team after previously serving as the Vulcans' defensive coordinator. He went on to a distinguished career as an athletic director and wrestling head coach at Beth Center High School and has served as an assistant football coach at several other high schools. Caputo was inducted into the Belle Vernon Area Football Hall of Fame in 2001, the Beth Center Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Washington-Greene County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in 2005.
Dawson-Anderson was a four-year starting midfielder and defender for the women's soccer team from 1994 through 1997. She was a four-time all-conference and all-region selection that earned All-American honors three times. Despite sacrificing personal statistics by moving to defense to help team depth, Dawson-Anderson still ranks sixth in school history for career points with 58 and second in career assists with 28. Her 11 assists in 1995 still ranks 11th in school history. She was the 1995 PSAC women's soccer Player of the Year. She becomes the second women's soccer player inducted into the Cal U Hall of Fame along with 2007 inductee and teammate Sherry Valera-Veneziale.
Herron was a blocking quarterback for the football team from 1950 through 1952 and a key member of Cal U's 1951 Pythian Bowl that made the school's first-ever post-season appearance in football. He directed and blocked the single-wing offense that paved the way for 1995 Cal U Hall of Fame inductee
Elmo Natali, who produced the school's first 1,000-yard rushing season in 1952. Herron was also a star catcher for the baseball team and later served as Cal's offensive line coach/offensive coordinator from 1960 through 1969 and then 1972 through 1974. He received emeriti professor status after retiring from Cal in May 1982 after teaching for more than 20 years, mostly in elementary education where he directed the student teachers. He passed away in 2001.
Lonigro was a dominant post-player for the men's basketball team from 1955 through 1957 after transferring to Cal U from Saint Vincent College. He averaged 16.6 points during his career and scored a single-game career-high 41 points in a victory over Edinboro. Lonigro earned first-team, all-conference and Associated Press - All Pennsylvania Honorable-Mention honors during his 1956-57 senior season when he averaged 20.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. He averaged 14.6 points per game as a junior and received the Basketball Alumnus of the Year Award in 2001. He has been a professional executive in mental health services for nearly 50 years.
Roebuck was a three-year starting first baseman and catcher for the Vulcan baseball team from 1986 through 1988 and finished with a .320 career batting average. He also had career totals of 13 home runs, 108 runs batted in, 68 runs, 29 doubles, six triples and 52 walks. He led the 1988 Vulcans with a .372 batting average and also had single-season team highs of 14 doubles and 42 runs batted in. He played under 2003 Cal U Hall of Fame inductee Chuck Gismondi. He is the athletic director and head baseball coach at Brownsville High School his scholastic alma mater
Coached by 2004 Cal U Hall of Fame inductee Ted Nemeth, The 1958 Vulcans were the second of now three undefeated football teams in school history. Cal went a perfect 8-0 in '58 while outscoring its opponents by a per-game average of 25.9 to 3.9. Four of the Vulcans' eight victories that season were by shutouts and Cal's closest victories that year were 13-0 blankings of Indiana and Edinboro. The Vulcans led the nation in rushing defense and was second nationally in total defense Nemeth received the Pittsburgh Dapper Dan's "Small College Coach of the Year" recognition in 1958. The inductees will participate in the University's annual Homecoming Parade tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 11, and will be introduced prior to the Vulcans' Homecoming football game against Lock Haven University. Kickoff is set for 3:10 p.m. at Adamson Stadium.
