WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 4) – The Vulcans opened play at the Wheeling Hall of Fame/Alumni Tournament with a pair of losses on Friday, dropping a 3-0 match to UIndy and a 3-2 loss to the host Cardinals.
NOTES
• California (0-5) has opened the year with matches against teams from four different conferences.
• Junior
Lindsey Scammell led the team with a combined 21 kills on a .395 hitting percentage.
• Sophomore
Olivia Weiseman posted 19 kills and 28 assists over the two matches, while freshman transfer
Molly Smiddy finished with 48 assists.

Tori Newton collected a combined 44 digs on Friday.
• Head coach
Audrey Emerich is one of three head coaches at the event who previously played at Wheeling head coach Christy Benner, who is in her 25th season with the program.
vs UIndy
• The Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (25-15, 25-17, 25-17) to the Greyhounds after being held to a .062 hitting percentage.
• UIndy advanced to the finals of the NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament last year while posting its winningest season since 2013.

• Smiddy and Weiseman combined for 20 assists with Smiddy tallying a team-high 13 assists.

• Cal won two of the first three sets before dropping a 3-2 match (18-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21, 17-15) to host Wheeling.
• Weiseman finished with 17 kills on a .212 attack percentage and added a career-high 21 assists for her first kill/assist double-double of the year.
• Scammell established a career high with 16 kills on 31 attempts for a .484 hitting percentage, while Salisbury posted a season-high 13 kills on a .286 clip.
• Smiddy registered a career-high 35 assists.
• Newton paced the team with a career-high 33 digs and three service aces, while freshman
Alece Evanto added a season-high 15 digs.
• Sophomore
Riley Evans totaled four blocks versus the Cardinals.
