SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Aug. 29) – The California (PA) men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit while playing a man down for over 55 minutes, tying the game on a pair of penalty kicks before playing the final 15 minutes down two players while earning a 2-2 tie at Shippensburg in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (1-0-1) and Raiders have played in each of the last five years with the teams tying in each of the last two meetings.
• Shippensburg scored the opening goal in the 16th minute before sophomore transfer
Filip Barta was issued a straight red card at the 21:09-mark.
• The Raiders quickly capitalized on the man advantage by scoring in the 24th minute.
• Shippensburg finished with an 11-2 shot advantage in the first half while taking a 2-0 lead into halftime.
• The Vulcans capitalized on a foul by the Raiders goalkeeper with
Seth Basinger converting a penalty kick at the 60:27-mark, 2-1.
• Shippensburg was later whistled for a handball in the box in the 76th minute and Basinger tied the score with his second successful penalty kick of the game.
• Following the goal, Basinger was issued a straight red card and the Vulcans were then forced to play with only nine players compared to the full squad of 11 for the Raiders.
• Shippensburg pressured the net with 10 shot attempts over the final 14 minutes of play with only one was on goal as the Vulcans protected the tie.
• The Raiders finished the game with a 28-6 shot advantage and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
