CALIFORNIA (Aug. 27) – The Vulcans scored a pair of goals in the second half, including the game-winning goal with just under four minutes remaining, on Thursday evening in a 2-1 victory against Wheeling at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex.

• California has opened the year with a win over Wheeling in back-to-back seasons.
• The Cardinals feature a first-year head coach in Jack Shearer, who spent the last four years as a head coach at the scholastic level.
• Wheeling scored in the 42nd minute to take a 1-0 lead at the break despite Cal attempting five shots in a span of 13 minutes midway through the first half.
• The Vulcans tied the score at the 59:11-mark on a goal by freshman

• Starting in the 69th minute, Wheeling was forced to play a man down for the remainder of the game after a player was issued a red card following his second yellow card of the game.
• The Vulcans claimed the lead at the 86:02-mark when Marcelo Espinosa recorded an unassisted goal, his first career game-winning goal.
• Cal finished the game with a 14-8 shot advantage, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal.
• The Vulcans also posted a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks with four kicks in the second half.
