CALIFORNIA (June 1) – A native of New York and former collegiate offensive lineman, Brady Andrews was announced as the head flag football coach on Monday morning, effective immediately.
Andrews recently served as a coach for multiple football teams at Johnson City High School in Upstate New York. He was an offensive lineman at SUNY Cortland from 2019-22 with the Dragons appearing in the NCAA Division III Playoffs in each of his last two seasons.
"We are excited to hire Brady Andrew as the head flag football coach at California. His energy and passion for the success of our flag football program is evident in the work he has put forth in already preparing for next season," said California Athletic Director
Dr. Karen Hjerpe. "He possesses an in-depth understanding of both the fundamentals of the game and advanced play-calling and strategies. We were impressed by his overall work ethic and are excited to see where he can take our program."
As a collegiate player, Andrews helped SUNY Cortland post a combined 28-6 overall record over three seasons (2020 campaign was canceled due to COVID). The Dragons appeared in the New York Bowl in 2019 before recording back-to-back undefeated seasons in Empire 8 Athletic Conference play. SUNY Cortland returned to the NCAA Playoffs in 2021 for the first time in six years and tied the then-school record with 11 victories. In 2023, the Dragons captured the NCAA Division III National Championship for the first time in program history.
"I'm incredibly excited to join California and lead the flag football program during such an exciting time for the sport," said Andrews. "We're going to build a culture of energy, toughness and relentless competition while creating an experience our student-athletes will be proud of. I'm excited to get started, connect with everyone and building on the foundation of California flag football."
Andrews served as a teacher in the Johnson City Central School District the last two years. He has experience coaching at the scholastic level with modified flag football, assistant flag football and boys' football. Additionally, Andrews spent time in Western New York in Salamanca and Cattaraugus.
This spring, California sponsored the first season of flag football in program history. Noah Mitchell served as the first-ever head coach before transitioning to the football coaching staff as the quarterback coach/co-offensive coordinator.
