California sweeps doubleheader at Clarion

Hollerich combines for five hits; Vulcans tally eight doubles, including three by Davis, in Game 2

CLARION, Pa. (April 26) – The California (PA) softball team posted a doubleheader sweep at Clarion on Sunday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, claiming a 4-3 victory in Game 1 and a 7-4 win in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (17-25, 12-12) won three of four games against the Golden Eagles this spring with the three victories coming by a combined five runs.
• Cal has played nine one-run games this year, including three this weekend.
• Senior shortstop Jenna Hollerich recorded a pair of multi-hit games from the leadoff spot on Sunday.

GAME 1
• Cal and Clarion both scored two run in the first inning and one run in the fifth inning.
• Hollerich and senior first baseman Makaylia Schlosser each tallied three hits, as the Vulcans finished with 10 hits in the victory.
• Cal took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run single by Schlosser with two outs before Clarion tied the score in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by third baseman Sabi Medrano.
• The Vulcans reclaimed the lead in the second on an RBI single by freshman left fielder Indyana Bolyea, 3-2.
• Cal stretched the lead to 4-2 with an RBI single by freshman designated player Alexa Edmunds in the fifth before Clarion answered with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
• Freshman Abigail Singer (6-4) earned the victory after allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits in 4.0 innings.
• Senior Cheyenne Beayon recorded her third save of the year after yielding one run (earned) over 3.0 innings of relief.

GAME 2
• The Vulcans collected eight doubles in the victory, including three by sophomore catcher Kirra Davis.
• Davis reached base four times (three doubles, walk), drove in three runs and scored one run.
• Sophomore third baseman Makayla Jerin posted three hits, one RBI and one run scored, while Hollerich finished with two hits and one run scored.
• The Golden Eagles scored one run in the first and extended the lead to a 3-0 margin in the second, highlighted by a solo homer from pitcher Ainsely Perdicaris.
• Cal tied the score in the third inning on an RBI double by Jerin before Schlosser followed with a two-run homer, 3-3.
• The Vulcans claimed a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Davis and added a run in the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Edmunds.
• In the seventh, Bolyea and Davis delivered back-to-back doubles with two outs to increase the lead to a 7-3 margin.
• Bolyea (3-7) earned the victory after yielding four runs (all earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
• Beayon returned to the circle and recorded all three outs in the seventh inning.

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to action on Friday, May 1, with a home doubleheader against Seton Hill in PSAC West play at Lilley Field.
• Cal was slated to host a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 28, versus Point Park, however the twinbill was cancelled on Sunday.
