WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 25) – The Vulcans claimed a doubleheader split against IUP on Senior Day at EQT Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-1 in Game 1 before falling 11-6 in Game 2.
NOTES
• California (25-18, 13-11) sits in a tie with Slippery Rock for fourth place in the divisional standings entering the final week of the regular season.
• The Vulcan and The Rock will play a four-game series next weekend.
• In 2026, the top-five teams from each division qualify for the PSAC Tournament that will be hosted by Slippery Rock on May 6-9.
GAME 1
• Senior
Nathan Holmes (3-1) earned the victory after allowing one run (earned) on six hits in 6.0-plus innings (87 pitches).
• Freshman
Evan Stranko registered his third save of the year after retiring all three batters he faced in the seventh inning.
• In the third, Cal was unable to capitalize on three errors by IUP in the inning and stranded runners on second and third.
• Holmes kept the game scoreless in the fourth despite the Crimson Hawks starting the inning with a double.
• In the bottom of the inning, the Vulcans took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by freshman second baseman
Noah Kaszer with two outs.
• IUP manufactured a run in the seventh following a leadoff double before stranding the tying run in scoring position.
GAME 2
• The Crimson Hawks scored 10 runs in the third inning after 11-straight batters reached base.
• Senior first baseman
Connor Evans posted two hits, two RBI, one run scored and one walk.
• Junior
Caleb Collins finished with two hits and one run scored, while classmate
Kyle Rizzo tallied two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
• Cal took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI triple by Evans and Rizzo later added a two-out RBI single.
• The Vulcans added to the lead when Evans reached on a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the second.
• In the third, IUP erupted for 10 runs on four hits, five walks, two hit by pitches and one error off four different pitchers.
• The Vulcans scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a double by Rizzo and a two-base error on the play allowed him to score before senior designated hitter
Colin Patterson belted a solo homer, 10-5.
• Senior starting pitcher
Roman Gill (5-2) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits in 2.0 innings.
• Stranko returned the mound and allowed one run (earned) on seven hits over a career-high 5.0 innings (51 pitches).

• The Vulcans are scheduled to return to action Tuesday, April 28, when they host Frostburg State in non-conference play at EQT Park.
