WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 28) – Facing one of the top teams in the Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Atlantic Region, the California (PA) baseball team suffered a 3-2 loss against Frostburg State on Tuesday afternoon at EQT Park in non-conference play.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (25-19) have split six games against the top-four teams in the MEC standings this year.
• Cal used five different pitchers in the mid-week contest, as it prepare for the final conference series, which begins in two days.
• Redshirt freshman starter
Jacob Stallsmith allowed two runs (both unearned) on zero hits while issuing four walks over 4.0 innings (68 pitches).
• Freshman
Logan Bauer (0-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding one run (earned) on one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings while making his second appearance of the year.
• Frostburg State stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the top of the first before Cal left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.
• In the third, the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead without recording a hit.
• The Vulcans countered in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly before again leaving the bases loaded.
• In the sixth, Cal tied the score at 2-2 on an RBI single by freshman center fielder
Charlie Nigut.
• The Bobcats responded with a leadoff homer in the top of the seventh inning, 3-2.
• The Vulcans finished the game with 10 runners left on base, including seven in scoring position.
• Sophomore right fielder
Cole Fleck finished with two hits and one run scored, while junior third baseman
Caleb Collins tallied one hit, one RBI and one run scored.
• Junior designated hitter
Ikon Jones stole three bases and now leads the team with a career-high 16 steals.
NEXT
• The Vulcans return to the diamond on Thursday, April 30, with a doubleheader against Slippery Rock in PSAC West play, starting at 1 p.m.
• Cal and Slippery Rock enter the final weekend of the regular season tied for fourth place in the divisional standings, having already secured a berth in next week's PSAC Tournament.
