CALIFORNIA (April 18) – The California (PA) softball team split a doubleheader on Senior Day against Gannon at Lilley Field on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, earning a 9-5 win in Game 1 and suffering a 9-6 extra-inning loss in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (15-23, 10-10) recognized their seven seniors prior to play on Saturday.
• Cal and Gannon split both doubleheader this spring after the Vulcans won a post-season meeting in the PSAC Tournament in each of the last two years.
• Freshman designated player
Alexa Edmunds finished with four hits, including a solo homer, and four runs scored in the twinbill.
GAME 1
• The Vulcans scored all nine of their runs in three-straight innings.
• Senior center fielder
Mikayla Linkous posted two hits, three RBI, one run scored and one walk, while Edmunds tallied two hits and three runs scored.
• Freshman center fielder
Indyana Bolyea collected two hits, two RBI and one run scored and sophomore third baseman
Makayla Jerin finished with two hits.
• Gannon scored three runs in the top of the second before Cal answered with three runs on three hits, two walks and one error in the bottom of the inning.
• Bolyea delivered an RBI single before the Vulcans later drew a pair of bases-loaded walk.
• Cal claimed an 8-3 lead by scoring five runs (all unearned) with two outs in the third inning.
• Linkous posted a two-run double with the bases loaded before senior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich followed with a three-run homer.
• The Vulcans added a two-out RBI double by Bolyea in the fourth before the Golden Knights scored a run in both the fifth and seventh innings.
• Freshman
Abigail Singer (5-4) earned the win after allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits with zero walks over 5.2 innings (76 pitches).
GAME 2
• Cal tied the score in the fifth before playing its second extra-inning contest of the year.
• McCutcheon finished with two hits and four RBI behind a three-run homer, while Schlosser collected three hits.
• Edmunds posted two hits with a solo homer and two RBI, while Hollerich scored a pair of runs.
• The Golden Knights broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the second inning after four-straight batters reached safely with two outs.
• Cal responded in the third with a three-run homer by McCutcheon before Edmunds later belted a two-out solo homer, 5-4.
• Gannon posted a two-run double with two outs in the fourth before Cal tied the score in the bottom of the fifth RBI on an RBI single by Edmunds to score Jerin from second base.
• The Golden Knights scored three runs in extra innings on four singles and an intentional walk, 9-6.
• Bolyea (2-6) was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs (all earned) on six hits and three walks in 4.0 innings.
