California rallies to walk-off vs Wheeling

Vulcans score four runs on four hits in the ninth inning; Stranko earns third win in relief this year

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 14) – The California (PA) baseball team trailed by three runs entering the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday afternoon before rallying for a 6-5 walk-off win over Wheeling on a two-out RBI single by sophomore first baseman Cole Fleck at EQT Park in non-conference play.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (22-12) swept both meetings against the Cardinals this season after the teams previously played at EQT Park on March 31.
• Freshman center fielder Charlie Nigut collected three hits, one RBI and two runs scored from the leadoff spot.
• Junior designated hitter Ikon Jones posted two hits and two RBI, while sophomore shortstop Brandon McClain-Banks finished with two hits, one RBI and one walk.
• Senior Connor Evans tallied a pair of RBI while being held hitless for the first time since March 21, snapping an 18-game hitting streak.
• Cal scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first before Wheeling scored twice on just one hit in the second inning.
• The Cardinals left the bases loaded in the third before adding a two-out RBI single in the fourth, 3-1.
• Wheeling extended the lead in the seventh inning with a two-run double before stranding runners on the corners.
• In the eighth, the Vulcans cut the deficit to a 5-2 margin on an RBI double by Jones.
• Cal scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth to secure its second-straight, walk-off victory at EQT Park.
• With runners on first and second, Nigut lined an RBI single to left field before a walk loaded the bases.
• Evans was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jones followed with an RBI single before a runner was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.
• Fleck delivered the game-winning hit on the first pitch of his at-bat.
• The Vulcans used five pitchers in the contest with freshman Evan Stranko (3-1) earning the victory after tossing 2.0 scoreless, hitless innings of relief.

• Cal returns to action this weekend with a four-game series against nationally-ranked Seton Hill, starting on Friday, April 17, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m.
