CLARION, Pa. (April 11) – The Vulcans scored a combined 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep at Clarion in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, rolling to a 14-4 win in Game 1 and a 13-2 victory in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (21-12, 11-5) swept the four-game season series with the Golden Eagles for the fifth-consecutive year.
• Senior right fielder
Connor Evans tallied six hits, four RBI and six runs scored on Saturday and finished the series going 10-for-17 with nine runs.
• Junior designated hitter
Ikon Jones posted three hits, highlighted by a grand slam, with seven RBI, two runs scored and four walks in the doubleheader.
GAME 1
• Cal held a 6-3 lead before scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth inning.
• Evans posted three hits, one RBI and three runs scored, while Jones finished with two hits, six RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
• Junior catcher
Kyle Rizzo tallied two hits and one walk, while freshman center fielder
Charlie Nigut registered a solo homer, two RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
• The Vulcans took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first with a solo homer by Nigut before the next five batters reached base safely.
• Jones added a two-run single in the fourth before Clarion cut the deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the inning.
• In the fifth, Cal scored on a bases-loaded fielder's choice, a walk and an RBI single by Evans before Jones belted a grand slam.
• Sophomore
Coleman Fletcher (3-0) earned the victory after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with a career-high six strikeouts over 6.0 innings.
GAME 2
• The Vulcans held a 1-0 lead before scoring 12 runs over the final four innings.
• Sophomore shortstop
Brandon McClain-Banks tallied four hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Evans finished with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored.
• Junior second baseman
Caleb Collins posted three hits, one RBI and two runs scored, while redshirt freshman
Chad Helwich and sophomore
Peyton Ford combined for four hits, one RBI, three runs scored and one walk while splitting time in left field.
• Cal scored on a ground-out in the first before scoring five runs in the fourth inning.
• Senior first baseman
Colin Patterson appeared to deliver a grand slam before an appeal ruled he missed the plate.
• The Vulcans later scored on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and Collins followed with an RBI single.
• In the fifth, Cal scored four runs on four hits and two walks to extend the lead to a 10-0 margin.
• McClain-Banks led off the inning with a homer and Evans later collected a two-run single before scoring on a triple by Jones.
• The Golden Eagles scored twice in the fifth before the Vulcans scored three runs in the seventh.
• Rizzo and McClain-Banks posted RBI singles before a bases-loaded hit by pitch marked the final run of the game.
• Senior starting pitcher
Roman Gill (4-1) earned the win after scattering four hits over 4.0 scoreless innings.
