California posts home win over Salem

McClain-Banks, Jones combine for five hits, five RBI; Vulcans use five pitchers in victory

WASHINGTON, Pa. (March 4) – The California (PA) baseball team scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by sophomore shortstop Brandon McClain-Banks, while earning a 7-2 victory against Salem at EQT Park in non-conference play on Wednesday afternoon.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (4-3) have won all four home games at EQT Park this spring.
• McClain-Banks was one of three players to record a multi-hit game in the victory.
• He posted two hits with the two-run homer and three RBI.
• Junior left fielder Ikon Jones finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while redshirt freshman designated hitter Chad Helwich added two hits and two runs scored.
• Cal scored four runs on three hits and one walk in the bottom of the first, 4-0.
• The Vulcans scored on a ground-out before Jones delivered a two-run double and McClain-Banks belted his first career homer.
• The Tigers stranded a runner on third in the second and third innings before center fielder Landon McAlpine delivered a solo homer in the top of the fifth, 4-1.
• In the bottom of the inning, Jones posted an RBI triple before McClain-Banks followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to a 6-1 margin.
• The Vulcans added a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth before the Tigers scored one run in top of the eighth, 7-2.
• Cal used five pitchers in the victory with sophomore starting pitcher Colin Watson being credited with the win after logging 2.1 scoreless innings.
• Sophomore Coleman Fletcher worked 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one run (earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to action with seven games in Central Florida from March 8-14, starting on Sunday, March 8, against St. Cloud State (MN).
