Vulcans split dramatic twinbill with Clarion

Davis records five hits, six RBI and three runs scored; Benish, Bolyea belt homers in doubleheader

CALIFORNIA (March 29) – The California (PA) softball team claimed a doubleheader split against Clarion on Sunday afternoon at Lilley Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, earning a 12-11 walk-off victory in Game 1 before suffering a 10-6 loss in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (9-17, 4-4), which earned their second walk-off win of the year, allowed a combined 14 runs in the seventh inning of the twinbill.
• Sophomore Kirra Davis totaled five hits, six RBI and three runs scored against the Golden Eagles.
• Cal finished with 12 extra-base hits in the home doubleheader.

GAME 1
• Cal held an 8-3 lead before allowing eight runs in the top of the seventh.
• The Vulcans then scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to earn the walk-off victory.
• Davis posted three hits, four RBI, two runs scored and one walk.
• Freshman shortstop Savanna Benish belted a solo homer, scored three runs and drew three walks, while freshman pitcher Indyana Bolyea collected two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
• Freshman designated player Alexa Edmunds registered three hits and two RBI, while sophomore second baseman Amarah McCutcheon finished with two hits, two RBI, one run scored and one walk.
• The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the second after benefiting from a pair of errors.
• Cal scored twice in the bottom of the third on a solo homer by Benish and a two-out RBI single by Davis.
• Davis added a two-run single in the fifth before the Vulcans scored four runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back, two-run doubles by McCutcheon and Edmunds, 8-3.
• Clarion then claimed an 11-8 lead in the top of the seventh, highlighted on a two-run homer by second baseman Sophie Petrash with two outs.
• In the bottom of the inning, the Vulcans scored four runs on three hits and one error.
• Bolyea belted a two-run homer before Davis later tied the score at 11-11 on a two-out solo homer.
• McCutcheon then reached on a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch.
• She scored the game-winning run on a throwing error by the catcher, who was attempting to force the batter out at first on a dropped third strike.
• Freshman Abigail Singer (4-3) earned the win after allowing three runs (all earned) in 1.0 inning of relief.
• Bolyea took a no-decision after yielding eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in 6.0 innings (102 pitches).

GAME 2
• The Vulcans held a 6-4 lead before the Golden Eagles scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
• Senior center fielder Mikayla Linkous tallied two hits and three RBI, while Davis finished with two hits, two RBI and one run scored.
• Sophomore third baseman Makayla Jerin posted two hits, one RBI and one run scored.
• Cal took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the second before Davis recorded a two-run double in the third.
• Linkous collected a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the fourth, 5-0.
• The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the fifth before both teams scored a run in the sixth, 6-4.
• In the seventh, Clarion scored six runs on four hits and two errors off three different pitchers.
• Senior Megan Nidoh (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on one hit and two walks.
• Freshman starting pitcher Autumn Bielecki took no-decision after surrendering three runs (all earned) on six hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings (100 pitches).

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to action on Friday, April 3, when they play a doubleheader against Gannon in Erie, Pennsylvania.
