SALEM, Va. (March 14) – The Vulcans split a pair of games while opening play in Virginia at the Salem Invitational on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 6-3 loss to West Virginia State before earning a 2-1 victory against Wheeling.
NOTES
• The California (PA) softball team (4-12) has already played six games Mountain East Conference (MEC) opponents.
• The Vulcans played their initial one-run game of the season when against Wheeling.
VS WEST VIRGINIA STATE
• Against the Yellow Jackets (7-6), senior
Makaylia Schlosser reached base four times (two hits, two walks) and added one RBI and one run scored.
• Freshman designated player
Alexa Edmunds posted two hits and scored one run against the Yellow Jackets.
• WVSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before Cal cut the deficit with an RBI double by Schlosser, 2-1.
• The Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the third before the Vulcans countered with a single run in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to a 6-3 margin.
• Freshman starting pitcher
Indyana Bolyea (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 7.0 innings.
VS WHEELING
• Against the Cardinals (3-13), freshman
Abigail Singer (2-1) earned the complete-game victory after allowing one run (earned) on just two hits in 7.0 innings (95 pitches).
• The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth when sophomore right fielder
Kirra Davis belted a two-run homer with two outs after the inning started with a walk.
• The Vulcans stranded a pair of runners in the seventh before the Cardinals collected a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning.
• Senior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich collected two hits and one walk in the victory.
