California suffers loss at No. 5 Gannon

Balog scores a team-high 17 points; Teams combined for 11 ties, six lead changes

ERIE, Pa. (Feb. 7) – The Vulcans were tied with just over three minutes left in the third quarter before dropping a 72-51 contest at No. 5 Gannon on Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play.

NOTES
• California (10-14, 6-8) faced its sixth nationally-ranked opponent of the season.
• Sophomore Trinity Balog led the team with 17 points behind eight-of-eight from the free-throw line and added three rebounds and three assists.
• Junior Kennedy Bankett scored 12 points against the Golden Knights, while classmate Macy Sardone finished with nine points, four rebounds and two steals.
• Fellow junior Kimaya Williams led the team with 10 rebounds.
• The Vulcans held a five-point lead midway through the first quarter before trailing by an 18-17 margin at the end of the quarter.
• Cal later entered halftime tied at 27-27 after the teams combined four lead changes and seven ties in the first half.
• The Golden Knights mounted a 15-4 run over the final three-plus minutes of the third quarter to take a 52-41 lead.
• Gannon later posted a 13-2 run over five minutes in the fourth quarter to extend the margin to 67-45 with 2:14 left to play.
• The Vulcans finished the game shooting 32.7 percent (16-of-49) from the floor and converted 17-of-18 (94.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
• Gannon held a 29-26 rebounding advantage and scored 36 points in the paint.

NEXT
• The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 11, when they travel to face Seton Hill in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, at 5:30 p.m.
• The Griffins enter next week in third place in the PSAC West standings, two games back of Gannon and IUP, which remain tied for first.
