Softball swept in opener at Fairmont State

Erb makes deubt as head coach at California; Vulcans use six pitchers in doubleheader

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (Feb. 27) – The California (PA) softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Fairmont State on Friday afternoon in its debut under first-year head coach Kristin Erb, suffering an 8-0 run-rule loss in Game 1 before falling by a 10-5 margin in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (0-2) have faced the Fighting Falcons in back-to-back years after previously not playing since the 2013 campaign.
• Cal used six different pitchers in the doubleheader with none working more than 3.0 innings.
• Four position players earned their first collegiate starts over the two games.

GAME 1
• Cal was limited two hits and one walk over 5.0 innings.
• The Fighting Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and later scored five runs in the third inning on five hits and one error, 6-0.
• Fairmont State added a run in the fourth before securing the run-rule victory on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
• Senior Cheyenne Beayon (0-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 2.0-plus innings (48 pitches).

GAME 2
• The Vulcans and Fighting Falcons combined for 24 hits and five errors in the contest.
• Senior third baseman Makaylia Schlosser posted two hits, two RBI and one run scored, while freshman designated player Alexa Edmunds finished with two hits and one RBI.
• Senior shortstop Jenna Hollerich added two hits and one run scored in the loss.
• Fairmont State held an 8-1 lead after four innings before Cal scored two runs on four hits in the fifth.
• Schlosser posted a RBI single and sophomore right fielder Kirra Davis followed with an RBI single.
• The Fighting Falcons countered with a pair of run in the bottom of the inning, 10-3.
• In the seventh, Edmunds collected an RBI double before the final run of the game scored on a ground-out.
• Freshman Autumn Bielecki (0-1) suffered the loss in her collegiate debut, yielding five runs (four earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings (48 pitches).
