WASHINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 19) – The Vulcans battled through heavy rain in the early innings on Thursday afternoon before posting a 15-10 season-opening victory at EQT Park in the debut of head coach
Joey Noro.
NOTES
• California (1-0) is featuring only its fourth head coach since the 1960 campaign.
• Noro served the last nine seasons as an assistant coach with the program, including the past two years as associate head coach.
• The Vulcans boasted seven players with multi-hit games and six players registered multi-RBI games.
• Senior first baseman
Conor Carney tallied four hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore transfer shortstop
Brandon McClain-Banks collected three hits and four RBI.
• Senior right fielder
Connor Evans finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while sophomore second baseman
Peyton Ford added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
• The Vulcans held a 3-0 lead before the Panthers belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth.
• Cal responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to stretch the lead to 7-2.
• The rain became an issue in the top of the fifth and eventually halted play.
• ODU scored seven runs in the inning without recording a hit to take a 9-7 lead.
• The Vulcans countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half to tie the score, 9-9.
• Cal added two runs in the sixth and scored four runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 15-9.
• Freshman
Evan Stranko earned the win after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings (56 pitches) of relief in his college debut.
• Senior
Roman Gill took a no-decision after working 4.0-plus innings in the Opening Day start.
