CALIFORNIA (July 17) – Former California (PA) starting pitcher Dylan Mathiesen was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 13th round of the 2025 MLB Draft on Monday afternoon.
Mathiesen was a freshman for the Vulcans in 2023 before playing the last two seasons at the NCAA Division I level with Liberty (Va.) of Conference USA. He was chosen with the 383rd overall pick by the Pirates, as the Flames featured a pair of players selected in the MLB Draft.
As a true freshman at Cal, Mathiesen finished with a 5-2 record and a 3.31 ERA over 54.1 innings pitched while totaling 56 strikeouts. He led the team in wins, ERA and strikeouts in 2023, plus finished second in innings pitched and starts. Mathiesen posted a 4-2 mark in seven conference starts and led qualifying PSAC pitchers for the fewest hits allowed per nine innings. The Montour native was dazzling in the PSAC Tournament against East Stroudsburg, limiting the Warriors to one run (earned) on three hits with seven strikeouts over 8.0 innings (130 pitches) in an elimination game.
Mathiesen served primarily as a reliver in 2024 at Liberty before moving into the rotation this spring. He led the Flames with 17 starts and logged 65.2 innings pitched with 84 strikeouts while holding opponents to a .245 average. In 2025, Mathiesen finished fourth in CUSA in strikeouts and paced the league in starts.
