Five Vulcans earn academic accolades

CALIFORNIA (May 27) – The California (PA) softball team placed five players on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior Kaitlyn Achtermeier, senior Taylor Babcock, junior Jenna Hollerich, junior Mikayla Linkous and junior Megan Nidoh received accolades from the organization. Achtermeier garnered the honor for a third-straight season, while Linkous earned the laurel for a consecutive year.

Achtermeier ranked third on the team with a .359 average (55-for-153) while pacing the team with 55 total hits. She set a career high with 17 doubles and added five homers to finish with a .582 slugging percentage while totaling 32 RBI and 29 runs scored. Achtermeier completed her bachelor's degree in psychology with minors in social work and biology with a 3.93 cumulative grade-point average (GPA).

A native of Rhode Island, Babcock led the team in virtually every pitching category in her first season with the program. She posted a 9-9 record over 35 appearances (17 starts) and totaled 114.2 innings pitched, including eight complete games. Babcock holds a 4.00 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in sport management with a concentration in intercollegiate athletic administration after earning her undergraduate degree in sports management with a minor in business administration from the College of Rhode Island.

Hollerich hit at a .286 clip (40-for-140) and finished with 27 RBI and 24 runs scored. She also paced the team with 131 assists in her first year with the program. Hollerich holds a 3.96 GPA while pursuing a degree in health sciences.

A native of Ohio, Linkous set a career high with a .333 average (27-for-81) and posted a .449 on-base percentage this spring. She finished with 24 runs scored while making 37 starts, also a career high. Linkous maintains a 3.97 GPA while majoring in health sciences with a minor in psychology.

Nidoh established career highs in every category this spring after totaling a combined 10.2 innings pitched the previous two years. She finished with a 3-6 record and logged 63.1 innings pitched over 25 appearances (five starts). Nidoh boasts a 3.96 GPA while pursuing a degree in sport management.

To qualify for CSC Academic All-District honors, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, maintain a cumulative 3.50 GPA and have played in 90 percent of the team's games or start 66 percent of the team's games. For pitcher nominations, the minimum is 17 appearances or 35.0 innings pitched. Additionally, each institution is capped at five nominees in the sport of softball.
