Amarah McCutcheon and senior
Kaitlyn Achtermeier both belted a pair of homers on Wednesday afternoon, as the California (PA) softball team swept a doubleheader at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action with a 9-0 run rule victory in Game 1 and a 12-11 win in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (14-28, 11-11) have won six of their last eight games and have scored at least eight runs five times during that span.
• Cal totaled 10 extra-base hits in the doubleheader at Edinboro.
• Freshman
Makayla Jerin and McCutcheon combined for nine hits, seven RBI and six runs scored.
• McCutcheon is the first player with double-digit homers in a season since two-time NFCA All-American Lindsay Reicoff set the school record with 19 homers in 2015.
GAME 1
• Cal scored seven runs in the top of the second to record its second run-rule win of the spring.
• McCutcheon posted two homers and five RBI, the first multi-homer game of her career.
• Senior left fielder
Carlena Fiorilli collected two hits, one RBI and two runs scored, while Jerin finished with two hits and one run scored.
• McCutcheon belted a solo homer in the first before the Vulcans tallied seven runs behind six-straight hits with two outs.
• Fiorilli posted an RBI single before senior center fielder
Brianna Sersevic followed with an RBI double.
• McCutcheon then recorded a three-run homer before Achtermeier later added a two-run homer.
• Cal scored its final run of the game in the fourth inning on a ground-out.
• Senior
Taylor Babcock (8-6) registered her first career complete-game shutout, scattering three hits over 5.0 scoreless innings (56 pitches).
GAME 2
• The Vulcans trailed 9-8 before scoring twice in both the fifth and seventh innings.
• Jerin posted three hits, two RBI and two runs scored, while Sersevic totaled two hits, four RBI and one run scored.
• Junior right fielder
Mikayla Linkous added two hits and three runs scored and McCutcheon finished with two hits and one run scored.
• Edinboro held a 5-1 lead before Cal scored three runs in the top of the third behind RBI singles by Jerin and junior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich.
• The Vulcans then scored four runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-6 lead.
• Linkous and Fiorilli started the inning with back-to-back doubles before Jerin later added a two-out RBI double and Achtermeier followed with a two-run homer.
• Edinboro responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning before Sersevic delivered a two-run single with two outs in the fifth.
• Sersevic again collected a two-run single in the seventh to give Cal a 12-9 lead.
• The Fighting Scots capitalized on a two-out error in the bottom of the inning to score a pair of runs before leaving the tying run on base.
• Junior
Megan Nidoh (2-6) was credited with the victory after allowing two runs (both unearned) in 3.1 innings of relief (38 pitches).
