CALIFORNIA (April 19) – The Vulcans broke a tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth in Game 1 on Saturday afternoon while splitting a doubleheader against Gannon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, winning an 8-4 contest in Game 1 before falling by a 14-8 margin in Game 2.
NOTES
• The California (PA) softball team (12-28, 9-11) has split its 14 home games this season.
• The Vulcans are averaging over seven runs in their last six games.
• Senior left fielder
Carlena Fiorilli reached base a combined seven times (four hits, three walks) and scored four runs against the Golden Knights.
GAME 1
• Cal broke a 4-4 tie by scoring four runs on five hits and one error in the bottom of the sixth inning.
• Junior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich tallied three hits and two RBI, while senior second baseman
Kaitlyn Achtermeier posted three hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
• Freshman third baseman
Makayla Jerin collected two hits and one RBI.
• Fiorilli and freshman designated player
Amarah McCutcheon both scored two runs in the win.
• Cal tied the score in both the first and third innings with RBI singles by Achtermeier and Jerin.
• The Vulcans again tied the score at 4-4 on a bunt single by Hollerich in the fifth.
• Fiorilli started the sixth with a solo homer, her first of the year, before McCutcheon later belted a solo homer.
• Hollerich added an RBI single and Cal added another run on the play due to a throwing error.
• Senior
Taylor Babcock (7-6) registered the complete-game victory after allowing four runs (all earned) on 10 hits in 7.0 innings (95 pitches).
GAME 2
• The Golden Knights mounted a pair of five-run innings while earning a 14-8 win.
• Fiorilli finished with three hits, two RBI, two runs scored and two walks in the contest.
• Junior right fielder
Mikayla Linkous added two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
• McCutcheon belted a two-run homer, her eighth of the year, in the third to cut the deficit to a 3-2 margin.
• Gannon answered with five runs in the top of the fourth behind a grand slam by left fielder Abbey Girman.
• Cal later scored twice in both the fourth and sixth to cut the deficit to a 9-6 margin.
• The Golden Knights responded with five runs in the seventh after capitalizing on a two-out fielding error.
• Linkous delivered a two-out RBI triple and then scored on a single by Fiorilli in the bottom of the seventh.
• Freshman
Makenna Curran (0-5) suffered the loss after surrendering 12 runs (seven earned) in 6.1 innings (151 pitches).
