Vulcans sweep season series against IUP

Kramer ties all-time PSAC record for saves; California allowed 10 earned runs over four-game series

WASHINGTON, Pa. (April 18) – The California (PA) baseball team completed a season sweep of IUP on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep at EQT Park in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action, posting a 7-6 victory in Game 1 and a 1-0 win in Game 2.

NOTES
• The Vulcans (29-7, 15-4) hold a three-game lead in the win column for first place in the divisional standings with nine league games remaining.
• Cal has swept the four-game season series with IUP for the third time in six seasons.
• Senior Jake Kramer tied the PSAC record with his 24th career save in Game 2.
• He is now tied with Eric Eckert (1997-00) of Millersville for the all-time league mark.
• Kramer boasts two of the top-three single-season totals in school history after totaling 18 saves in the last two years.
• Senior left fielder Ryan Callahan went a combined 8-for-14 (.571 clip) with three RBI and five runs scored in the series against the Crimson Hawks.

GAME 1
• Cal scored seven-unanswered runs after trailing by a 4-0 margin following two innings.
• Senior third baseman Nathan Meeks tallied a two-run single in the bottom of the third before the Vulcans took a 6-4 lead in the fifth.
• Junior designated hitter Colin Patterson and freshman shortstop Peyton Ford tallied RBI singles in the inning, as Cal collected five singles and capitalized on a throwing error in the fifth.
• The Vulcans added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth.
• Junior Nathan Holmes (4-1) earned the victory after allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits and three walks in 6.0 innings (94 pitches).
• Sophomore Ryan Sluk registered his first save of the year after retiring IUP in order in the seventh.

GAME 2
• The Vulcans posted their second 1-0 victory in as many as weekends.
• Cal scored the lone run of the contest in the bottom of the third.
• The Vulcans opened the inning with back-to-back singles and a passed ball allowed both runners to advance into scoring position.
• Cal then placed a ball to the right side of the infield to allow Ford to score from third.
• Redshirt junior Roman Gill (4-2) posted the victory after scattering three hits and two walks over 5.0 scoreless innings (78 pitches).
• Kramer was credited with his eighth save of the season following a scoreless seventh inning.

NEXT
• Cal returns to the diamond on Wednesday, April 23, when it travels to face Davis & Elkins for a single nine-inning, non-conference contest in Elkins, West Virginia, at 1 p.m.
