AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 8) – The California (PA) baseball team closed its trip to Florida by scoring six-unanswered runs in an 8-3 victory against Assumption (MA) on Saturday morning.
NOTES
• The Vulcans (8-2) finished the week-long trip to The Sunshine State with a 5-2 mark while playing teams from four different states.
• Senior designated hitter
Santino Marra tallied four hits, one RBI and three runs scored from the cleanup spot.
• Senior third baseman
Nathan Meeks added two hits and four RBI, while senior first baseman
Payton Conte posted two hits and two runs scored.
• Assumption scored twice in the top of the first before Cal tied the score in bottom half on back-to-back RBI hits by Marra and Meeks.
• The Greyhounds and Vulcans again both scored one run in the second inning before Cal took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by senior right fielder
James Salvatori.
• The Vulcans added to the lead with three runs in the sixth, including a two-run double by Meeks with two outs.
• Cal added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth, 8-3.
• Junior starting pitcher
Michael Valente (3-0) earned the victory after allowing three runs (two earned) over 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts.
• Classmate
Nathan Holmes was credited with the save after working 3.2 innings of scoreless relief with nine strikeouts.
• Holmes, who has started a combined 17 games over the last two years, was making his seventh career relief appearance.

• The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, March 11, when they face Walsh (Ohio) with the location still to be determined.
