Donald Whitehead, Jr. was voted the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Athlete of the Year and joined redshirt junior guard
Cam Polak as All-PSAC West First-Team selections on Thursday afternoon.
Whitehead and Polak both received All-PSAC West laurels for the first time in their careers. The tandem provides the Vulcans the top-scoring backcourt in the league with both averaging over 18 points per game this season. Cal has advanced to the semifinals of the PSAC Tournament for a consecutive year after winning eight of its last nine games.
A 5-foot-10 junior, Whitehead becomes the eighth standout in program history to be chosen the PSAC West Athlete of the Year with the Vulcans boasting the recipient of the award for a consecutive season. He leads the team and ranks fourth in the league in scoring with a career-high 19.3 points game plus eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone this season. Whitehead also sits second in the conference with 5.1 assists per game after surpassing 100 assists for the first time in his career. The Hickory product paces the PSAC and is among the top 20 in NCAA Division II with 36.7 minutes per game.
Polak sits second on the team and sixth in the league in scoring with 18.2 points per game while totaling over 500 points this year. He is the only player on the team to start every game this season and has posted at least 20 points in 15 games. Polak leads the conference and ranks fifth in the counrty with a .917 free-throw percentage (121-of132) and is tied for fifth in the PSAC with 78 three-pointers made. The Steel Valley product has scored nearly 1,100 points in his collegiate career, including 937 points at Cal after playing his freshman campaign at West Chester.
Cal continues play in the PSAC Tournament on Saturday, March 8, when it faces host Shepherd in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, at 3:30 p.m. The Rams placed a pair of selections on the All-PSAC East Teams, including senior Chase Paar who ranks among the top five in the league in rebounds, blocks, field-goal percentage and double-doubles.
