KANSAS CITY, Mo. (March 24) – California (PA) guard
Donald Whitehead, Jr. was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District First-Team on Monday morning.
Whitehead received the regional honor following a standout junior season in which he set several career highs. He eclipsed 500 total points this year while averaging 19.4 points per game, which ranked sixth-most in the Atlantic Region. Whitehead scored at least 20 points in 16 games this season with a pair of 30-point games while shooting 41.2 percent (166-of-403) from the floor, including a .386 clip (73-of-189) from beyond the arc.
A 5-foot-10 guard, Whitehead led the region and ranked among the top 20 in the nation with 36:49 minutes per game. He played over 950 minutes as a junior despite missing four games due to injury. Whitehead also finished seventh in the region with both 5.0 assists per game and a 2.19 assist-to-turnover ratio, plus eclipsed 100 assists for the first time in his career.
Whitehead helped the Vulcans sit No. 4 in the country early in the year before the program withstood three season-ending injuries to starters. Cal then suffered a seven-game losing streak around the holidays, including three losses without Whitehead, before winning 10 of its last 13 games in the regular season. The Vulcans finished second in the divisional standings before advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The Vulcans have boasted an NABC all-region selection in each of the last five seasons after the program went over a decade without an honoree. The NABC all-region teams are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division II.
Whitehead is now eligible for All-America consideration with the announcement set for later this week.
