INDIANAPOLIS (March 5) – The California (PA) women's basketball team slipped one slot to ninth in the latest NCAA Atlantic regional rankings, which were released on Wednesday afternoon.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid with the top-five remaining teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids.
The top-five teams remained largely unchanged while the bottom half of the rankings featured movement this week. Seton Hill (22-5) remained the top team in the rankings despite suffering a pair of road losses in the final three games of the regular season. Edinboro (21-5) climbed one position to second after winning eight of its last nine games. IUP (19-6) dropped one slot to third after suffering a home loss last week, while Gannon (24-5) remained at the fourth position. Fairmont State (24-4) continued to sit fifth in the rankings after closing the regular season on a six-game winnings streak.
Fayetteville State (21-7) vaulted four spots to sixth after repeating as the CIAA Tournament Champions and Virginia State (23-5) dropped one position to seventh following a loss in the finals of the CIAA Tournament. Kutztown (18-11), Cal (15-11) and Lock Haven (19-8) all split games in the last week of the regular season and each slipped one slot to round out the regional rankings.
Note, rankings and records are reflective thru games as of Sunday, March 2.
The rankings do not reflect the results of any games played in the PSAC Tournament and MEC Tournament, which includes a road loss by regionally-ranked Cal (ninth).
The final rankings and selections for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday, March 9, at 10:30 p.m. EST.
