CALIFORNIA (March 21) – The Vulcans scored a combined 11 runs in first innings on Friday afternoon at Lilley Field in a doubleheader split against Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play, earning a 9-3 victory in Game 1 before dropping an 11-9 contest in Game 2.
NOTES
• California (4-20, 1-3) snapped a nine-game losing streak that dated back to March 5 with the win in Game 1.
• The Vulcans have scored a combined 33 runs in the first inning this year, which accounts for over 30 percent of the team's runs.
• Junior first baseman
Makaylia Schlosser posted three hits, four RBI, two runs scored and two walks in the doubleheader.
• Senior second baseman
Kaitlyn Achtermeier and junior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich combined for six hits, six RBI and five runs scored.
GAME 1
• Hollerich finished with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
• Schlosser tallied two hits, two RBI and one run scored, while senior center fielder
Brianna Sersevic collected two hits, one RBI and two runs scored.
• The Vulcans raced out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first on five hits and one error.
• Cal added to the lead with a two-out RBI single by Sersevic before scoring twice in the third, 8-0.
• The Fighting Scots countered with two runs in the fifth before Schlosser registered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth.
• Junior
Cheyenne Beayon (2-7) earned the win after allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits in 6.0 innings (61 pitches).
GAME 2
• Cal held a 7-5 lead before Edinboro third baseman Addy Maguire belted a two-out solo homer in the top of the sixth.
• The Fighting Scots followed with five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by a three-run homer by Maguire with two outs.
• The Vulcans responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning before the game ended with the tying run at the plate.
• Achtermeier totaled two hits, two RBI and one run scored, while sophomore right fielder
Alexa Daniels finished with two hits and two runs scored.
• Freshman third baseman
Makayla Jerin posted two hits and two RBI, while Sersevic scored twice after drawing three walks.
• Edinboro scored three runs in the first before Cal answered with five runs on one hit, three walks, one hit by pitch and two errors in the bottom of the inning.
• The Fighting Scots cut the deficit to 6-5 before the Vulcans scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth.
• Edinboro rallied to take the lead by an 11-7 margin after scoring five runs in the seventh.
• Junior
Megan Nidoh (1-4) was saddled with the loss after surrendering seven runs (all earned) on 12 hits and two walks in 6.1 innings of relief.
