CALIFORNIA (March 12) – The California (PA) softball team scored a combined nine runs in first innings on Wednesday afternoon while being swept in a doubleheader against Ashland at Lilley Field, suffering a 14-10 loss in extra innings in Game 1 before being dealt an 8-5 defeat in Game 2.
NOTES
• The Vulcans fall to 3-15 overall while playing their first home games of the spring.
• Junior first baseman
Makaylia Schlosser registered six RBI against the Eagles, highlighted by a grand slam in Game 1.
• Cal used five pitchers in the twinbill on Wednesday.
GAME 1
• Senior left fielder
Carlena Fiorilli tallied two hits, two RBI, two runs scored and one walk from the leadoff spot.
• Freshman designated player
Kirra Davis and junior shortstop
Jenna Hollerich both posted two hits and one run scored.
• The Vulcans raced out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a bases-loaded walk before Schlosser belted a grand slam, her first homer in nearly 200 career at-bats.
• Ashland claimed a 9-5 lead after scoring seven runs in the fifth behind a pair of homers.
• Cal tied the score in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Fiorilli, who later scored on a fielding error.
• The Eagles scored five runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a three-run homer.
• Cal managed one run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by freshman third baseman
Makayla Jerin.
• The game used the international tiebreaker rules in the eighth inning.
• Senior
Kaitlyn Achtermeier (1-1), who started the game at second base, suffered the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks over 2.2 innings (65 pitches).
GAME 2
• Schlosser delivered a two-run double and scored one run while hitting No. 5 in the lineup.
• Cal took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the first behind back-to-back RBI doubles by Schlosser and Achtermeier.
• The Eagles later scored runs in four-straight innings to claim an 8-4 advantage.
• Fiorilli posted a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to trim the deficit to 8-5.
• Junior starting pitcher
Megan Nidoh (1-2) was saddled with the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings (60 pitches).
