California splits twinbill at Charleston

Beayon posts complete-game shutout in Game 1; Vulcans, Golden Eagles feature new head coaches

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 25) – Facing the defending-NCAA Atlantic Region Champions, the Vulcans split a non-conference doubleheader at Charleston (WV) on Tuesday afternoon, posting a 1-0 victory in Game 1 before dropping an 8-0 run-rule contest in Game 2.

GAME 1
• The Vulcans scored the lone run of the contest with two outs in the top of the fifth.
• Junior transfer Cheyenne Beayon (1-2) registered a five-hit, complete-game shutout against the Golden Eagles.
• Junior transfer third baseman Lakyn Blackburn started the fifth with a single before sophomore Alexa Daniels entered as a pinch-runner.
• Daniels advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before senior center fielder Brianna Sersevic delivered a two-out RBI single.
• UC stranded the game-tying run in scoring position in the sixth before the seventh started with back-to-back singles.
• Beayon then retired three-straight batters to preserve the shutout.

GAME 2
• Cal was limited to three hits while dropping the run-rule contest at Charleston.
• The Vulcans had a pair of runners on base in the top of the first before the Golden Eagles tallied five runs on two singles, three walks and two hit by pitches in the bottom of the inning.
• Cal stranded runners on the corners in the second before UC scored on a sacrifice fly in the third and a two-run homer in the fourth.
• Freshman starting pitcher Makenna Curran (0-1) was dealt the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned) while facing just seven batters.
