Softball falls twice to MEC programs

McCutcheon belts first career homer; Vulcans face two-time, defending-MEC Champion UC

GLENVILLE, W.Va. (Feb. 23) – The California (PA) softball team dropped a pair of contests against Mountain East Conference (MEC) members on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 5-4 walk-off contest to West Virginia State and an 11-1 run-rule defeat by Charleston (WV).

NOTES
• The Vulcans (1-3) have played three games decided by two runs or less this spring with a pair of walk-off losses.
• Cal utilized a total of 18 different players in the two games on Sunday at the Sue Morris Sports Complex, the home facility of Glenville State.

VS WEST VIRGINIA STATE
• Cal scored three runs in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh before WVSU responded with three runs in the bottom the seventh.
• Junior right fielder Mikayla Linkous collected two of the team's six hits against the Yellow Jackets.
• The Vulcans scored on a bases-loaded single by Linkous in the sixth before a throwing error and a ground-out allowed two additional runs to score, 3-2.
• Cal stretched the lead with a sacrifice fly in the seventh before WVSU scored three runs on four-straight hits, including three doubles, in the bottom of the inning.
• Junior transfer Cheyenne Beayon (0-2) suffered the loss after surrendering three runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks in 2.0-plus innings of relief.
• Freshman starter Makenna Curran took a no-decision in her college debut, yielding two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walks.

VS CHARLESTON
• The Vulcans suffered a run-rule loss to the two-time, defending-MEC Champion Golden Eagles, which also captured the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship in 2024.
• UC scored six runs on six hits, including four extra-bases hits, in the top of the second.
• Freshman shortstop Amarah McCutcheon belted a solo homer, the first of her career, in the bottom of the inning.
• The Golden Eagles added four runs in the third inning and scored an additional run in the fourth.
• Junor Megan Nidoh (1-1) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits in 1.2 innings.

NEXT
• Cal returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25, when it travels to play a doubleheader at Charleston with games starting at 2 p.m.
